Bringing Home the Bakin'

bake my cake and eat it, too

I brought these cookies (undecorated) with me while I was babysitting and the kids had a great time icing and decorating them.  The cookies are the perfect sweetness to appeal to both kids and adults, and the icing looks beautiful when it hardens.  I got the cookie cutters from Williams-Sonoma a LONG time ago, but any cookie cutter will suffice.

Ann’s Sugar Cookies – Ann Curry

3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) softened unsalted butter

3/4 cup sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon grated orange peel (i omitted this)

2 1/4 cups all purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

Cream together butter and sugar.  Add egg, vanilla and orange peel.  Beat Together.  Add flour and salt.  Roll out to a quarter-inch thickness.  Cut into shapes on ungreased cooking sheet.  Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.  (makes about 2 dozen 2 1/2-inch cookies.

Royal Icing – Ann Curry

3 egg whites

1 bound confectioner’s sugar

food coloring

Mix together egg whites and confectioner’s sugar.  Use food coloring if desired.  Put icing on cooled cookies.  The icing will harden, so if you want to add sprinkles or other decorations, so it immediately.
